Lead with a Smile

Over the past few weeks I have spent some time traveling. This means that I spent a good amount of time in airports and on airplanes. This experience can often be one of frustration and negativity for most people, including me. Patience is a virtue that I have yet to master. I am sure you can relate to this.

My lack of patience seems to really show when I am traveling. I never understand why a flight is delayed when the weather is good in every place where the plane has been. I can stand sitting on the runway waiting our turn. And how about when your flight happens to get in a few minutes early, but has to wait because there is a plane at our gate. Why can’t they just go to another gate? I get upset with the lack of productive systems in place with TSA. The lines are never-ending. And the employees are usually not very nice.

Over the past few weeks, I have tried to change my own behavior when traveling because I know that I cannot control most of the things I just mentioned. My negativity only makes things worse, which is always the case with negativity. As I waited in the TSA lines, I tried to keep a smile on my face. I greeted the TSA agents with a smile and a good morning or a how are you today? I said thank you to each person I came across. I did the same on the plane. I smiled at the flight attendants. I said thank you for bringing my drinks and on my way off the plane.

It was amazing that these people seemed surprised to be greeted positively. I always am frustrated when traveling because people are not always very nice. But I imagine their job is not easy. They deal with negative people every day. It is hard to stay positive and be friendly when you are surrounded by negativity. Next time you travel, try to offer a smile to those around you. Greet the agents with positivity. It will make a difference.

We can change the world one smile at a time.  Stop getting frustrated with things you cannot control. Don’t blame other people because you lack patience. Try being pleasant. Try being a leader who leads with a smile on your face. Leadership is the solution to every problem we have in our world. It is really hard to be an effective leader when you are angry, frowning, or scowling. Smile and the world will smile with you.
