Do You Love What You Do?

Earlier this week, I spoke at a Leadership Conference and Retreat for the Texas Organization of Rural and Community Hospitals. I had the honor of serving this organization and their attendees with the opening keynote of the conference. I also was able to close out the day with another presentation. It was a long day for me. After I was done, I had to drive an hour and a half in traffic to make it to another event I was attending.

After my long day, I actually felt energized. As I was on stage in front of a great audience, I got to thinking just how much I love what I do. When I am speaking to a group, I truly believe that I am doing what I have been called to do. I am living out my purpose in life. Or as we say in our book, Retreat to Success, I am living my life on “purpose!” I am so lucky that I am able to do what I love. This is why I was still energized after my long day this week. And why I still have the energy to serve two more groups this week as their speaker. I believe that one of the keys to success in life is to love what you are doing.

This week I also had the pleasure of seeing the Broadway musical, Mamma Mia live. I love going to see these musicals not just because I enjoy a night out with my wife. I love it because I can tell how much the actors and actresses love what they do. They are living out their passion, their purpose in life. I could feel their energy as they shared their talent with the audience. And they do those shows over and over again. Sometimes over 400 times a year!

A few days ago, I went to see the symphony. I was reading about the orchestra and discovered that they all were volunteers. Each one of them shows up for performances, practices, and puts on a great show even though they don’t benefit financially in any way. You know that you love what you do, when you will do it for free. I saw this first hand with my parents. My mom has been a social worker most of her life. She has always loved it. My parents were both the youth ministers at our church for 14 years. They were volunteers (meaning unpaid)! They had an extra job on top of their paying jobs that they did just because they loved it so much. It was something they felt called to.

Do you love what you do? If the answer is yes, congratulations! You know exactly what I have been writing about. You are constantly energized because you are living your passion. If your answer is no, I hope you will set aside some quiet time very soon to reflect on your purpose in life. How can you begin to love what you do? To do what you love?

Life is too short to do something you hate or even just don’t like. If you truly want to be successful, if you want to lead a significant life, find something you love and surround yourself with people who you love. That is all the energy you will ever need.
