Leaders are Called to Forgive

Over the weekend we celebrated Easter. We remembered our Lord Jesus Christ making the ultimate sacrifice for us by dying on that cross and then rising from the dead three days later. As Jesus hung on the cross he said, “Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.” We are all called to lead like Jesus. That means that we are called to forgive just as He did.

Just as He did? Does that mean we must forgive people who kill us or those we love? That is exactly what it means. Jesus was able to forgive the people who beat Him, who humiliated Him and who killed Him. But on that cross He was still teaching. He was still leading by his great example when He asked His father, God, to forgive the people who were doing this to Him.

In our first book, Seeds of Success we talk a lot about forgiveness. It is one of the most important seeds that we discuss. We say that forgiveness will not only change your life, it will change others lives as well. My dads amazing forgiveness story changed his life. He was able to forgive his father who was an abusive alcoholic and who made life difficult for him, his brothers, and his mother. When he chose to forgive it changed his fathers life as he began to work to fix all of the relationships he had messed up. It changed his mothers life. It gave me and my brothers and sister a grandfather that we loved so much. That forgiveness truly changed everything for my family.

Forgiveness can be difficult. I have spoken to a lot of people who just don’t understand the awesome power of forgiveness. They say that they just can’t forgive. But that isn’t true. Leaders can always forgive no matter what the offense. Leaders can forgive because they know the power of that forgiveness.

I encourage you during this Easter season to step up as a leader and forgive whomever it is you need to forgive. I hope that you will ask for forgiveness from whomever you have offended. The time is now to be the leader God is calling you to be and that means you must practice forgiveness. Remember, that it will change your life and it will change the lives of others as well. I pray that God gives you the courage to forgive during this special Easter season.
