This Saturday, my wife Ashley will walk across the stage and receive her diploma to confirm her graduation from the Concordia MBA program. I wrote more about Ashley and her wonderful accomplishment in my post last Friday. Ashley knows what she will do now that she has her MBA. But a lot of times people do not know what to do after accomplishing a major goal.
This is why we teach our clients that the most important word in the goal setting process is NEXT! A diploma is not the end of Ashley’s journey. Whatever goal you accomplish in your life or in your career is not the end. It is just a part of your journey. You must consider what will come next? After a team wins the Super Bowl the MVP is always asked: “You just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?” The player always says, “I’m going to Disney World!”
It is great publicity for Disney and always a fun part of the end of the Super Bowl, but the question asked is what is most important. It is the question you must continually ask yourself after accomplishing a goal. It is the question you must ask those close to you when they accomplish a goal. What are you going to do NEXT? What your answer is to the question is not what is most important. What is important is that you have an answer.
Goal setting for leaders is a continuous process of personal growth. You must never stop growing. When you accomplish an important goal, you should take time to celebrate. You should take time to rest, relax, and most importantly, reflect on what you will do NEXT?
